How do I keep my septic system functioning properly?
A survey of Grand Traverse Bay watershed residents last fall found that nearly 13% either never, or simply don’t know, how often they have their septic tanks pumped. Not regularly pumping a septic tank can lead to septic system failure. This, in turn, can lead to polluting groundwater and nearby waterways, resulting in algae growth plus E. Coli and other bacterial contamination. Fixing a failed system can also cost thousands of dollars. Here are some tips to keeping your septic—and our watershed—in tip-top shape: Have your tank pumped every 3 to 5 years Avoid using anti-bacterial soap, which kills the beneficial bacteria in your septic tank that makes the system work Never dump toxic chemicals such as solvents, disinfectants, oil, paint, paint thinner or pesticides down drains Don’t flush or drain non-degradable materials such as fats, paper towels, hair, tampons, sanitary napkins or diapers The waste from septic tanks pumped in Grand Traverse County goes to a septage treatment plant that cleans the wastewater to meet water quality standards. Let’s all do our part to help keep the watershed clean and pristine!
