Kids Creek Erosion Sites
The Grand Traverse Conservation District was contracted to complete restoration work on four streambank erosion sites totaling approximately 180 feet of streambank along Kids Creek. Two of the sites were adjacent to the Meijer and Burger King along US31 in Traverse City. The remaining two were adjacent to Munson Hospital’s parking lot in Traverse City. These two sites will be restored in conjunction with a riparian buffer planting to further protect the creek from bank erosion and stormwater runoff.
Restoration work on these four sites included the installation of 128 feet of fish habitat “lunker” structures, 50 lineal feet of bio logs (used for bank stabilization and base for vegetative plantings), and approximately 10 cubic yards of rock rip-rap.

Boardman River at TC Farmers Market
This coming summer, the City of Traverse City will be restoring approximately 700 feet of streambank along the Boardman River in downtown Traverse City near the popular Farmers Market. There is extensive bank erosion at this site, exacerbated by foot traffic from people going down to the river and increasing numbers of ducks walking up the eroding bank to the market area looking for food handouts. Restoration plans for this stretch of river will include installing large rocks that discourage waterfowl from walking up banks, while still allowing pedestrian traffic down to the river.
